In 2013 I spent a day traveling the Big Sur coastline of California and it was just waaayyy too short. I could spent a month there just poking around with my camera. Clearly I'm not the only one. Here an ambitious photographer is seen against the backdrop of the Pacific.

The Last bit of Sun Hits Mt. Hood and Wild Clouds
I had a great time in Oregon this week. One afternoon and evening I spent focused on Mt. Hood. Here the last bit of setting sun hits Mt. Hood and lights up the underside of these strange bubbling clouds. A few minutes after this it started to rain. It lasted for about 15 minutes then blew through. Shot from from Trillium Lake.

Just to the right of center below the sun you can see the Vista House, an observatory at Crown Point in Multnomah County, Oregon, that also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. Louvre Pyramid and Reflecting Pool in Black and White
In 2016 I took my daughters to Paris for Christmas. Since I have my conference in Austin coming up and I’m traveling to Austin next week and I'm not traveling currently, I thought I'd re-examine some of those shots. I don't do a lot of black and white but this seemed to work out well. My daughters were very patient with me while we stood around at night and I shot. Thank you daughters.

Bluebonnets and Lightning #1
Yesterday evening, as the storms rolled through Texas I was shooting photos at the popular #Bluebonnet House in Marble Falls. As the sunset, lightning could be seen in the distance. It was beautiful to watch. Photographers come from all over to shoot this house and the bluebonnets but few get a shot like this one. #lightning #bluebonnets #marblefalls

Apparition
On my tour of Antelope Canyon this week I captured this apparition, clearly a human figure, bent slightly, facing left, doing something. It was gone moments later.
Antelope is a slot canyon on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. Hanging Over The Edge?
Sunset at Horseshoe Bend in Arizona where you can actually walk right up to the edge of this 1,000 ft high cliff. That’s the Colorado River down there. The dot to the left of my left shoe is kayak. There were easily several hundred people on this ledge with me watching sunset. Many of them were photographers so I had to do something unique with my sunset shot. It felt great to sit down and stretch out my legs. Road trip day 12. I’m on a 40+ day, 5,000+ mile #roadtrip of the western United States. ?#horseshoebend

Moonlit Canyon and Milky Way Core
You’ve not seen anything until you’ve seen the Grand Canyon lit by moonlight. The clouds would not behave, but in the end I had an hour where they cleared up and the first quarter moon shown down into the canyon while the Milky Way rose. And then, all too soon, the clouds once again hid the moon and the canyon was again plunged into darkness. The silly part was, I had the entire canyon all to myself. I did not see a single sole out that night. Road trip day 15. Magical Moonbow and the Big Dipper
Last night's full moon provided a very brief and rare occurrence at Lower Yosemite Falls - a moonbow! - and with the Big Dipper in the sky right above. Moonbows only occur when the moon is bright enough, it's in the proper position, there are no clouds, and the waterfall in question has enough water flowing and is generating enough mist. Road trip day 22. I’m on a 40+ day, 5,000+ mile #roadtrip of the western United States.

Climbers on the Wall
In Yosemite, after the sunset, you could see the lights of the climbers on El Capitan. This was shot around the full moon. The dots on the rock wall (I count 17) are climbers at night. It usually takes climbers 3-5 days to make it to the top which is 3,000 feet high. So, yep, they have to sleep on the wall. To sleep, climbers are in sleeping bags and wearing harnesses and are attached to the wall with a rope and anchor. Some sleep on a "portaledge" (short for "portable ledge"), a collapsible metal cot that attaches to an anchor. You can see Half Dome to the right. I shot this and enjoyed the night for a while and then went to sleep in my bed in the lodge for the night :) Thanks to Yosemite Conservancy for the information about climbers sleeping details.

Yosemite Moonbow and Reflection
When I was in Yosemite in May I got to witness and shoot the rare moonbow on Yosemite Falls. A couple of months ago I posted the a moonbow over the lower falls with the Big Dipper overhead. In this shot you see the moonbow across the upper falls and the reflection below in the marsh. Moonbows only occur when the moon is bright enough, it's in the proper position, there are no clouds, and the waterfall in question has enough water flowing and is generating enough mist.
