Pathway to the Stars
This is a pathway leading to a Grand Canyon viewing point, not too far from the Grand Canyon Lodge. The great thing about the Lodge is that there is very little light pollution. Cabins were only about 50 feet behind me and the large Lodge building was only 100 ft away. I lit the foreground with a flashlight as there really was no light pollution from the facilities. Amazing.

The Milky Way Over Austin
As seen from the center of the Pedernales riverbed at Pedernales Falls State Park, this epic panoramic-video (image below in the comments) shows the expanse of our Milky Way Galaxy overhead with the glow of the Austin, Texas radiating from the center, 35-miles away. Click HD (lower right, if available). I've posted the 25-image panorama that this video was made from in the comments below.

Milky Way Arches Over Arches National Park
It was my last night in Arches and the sky was just wonderful for a panorama over the geological formations. For those of you who know the area, this was shot from the Windows Trailhead parking lot. You can spot North Window in the center of the frame. South Window is blocked. Turret Arch is near the galactic core is but you're looking at it from the side here, so you cannot see through it from this angle.

Transfixed (a self portrait)
I had the great fortune to spend last night and wee ours of this morning at Wilson Arch alone with just the Milky Way to keep me company. Road trip day 10.
Funny story: there is a steep climb to get up to the arch which is huge as you can see. I got there after dark and after I got to the top, I took my camera out of my bag and while doing do the lens cap came off... Milky Way Arches Over Monument Valley, Arizona
Early on in my Western U.S. Road Trip I stopped by Monument Valley just to take this photo. Monument Valley is quite the sight to see during the day as well and I enjoyed it then too but at night under the stars was what I was after.
In other news... Yesterday I booked my next trip, this one will take me out of the United States for the first time since last summer. I head to Iceland for 10 days in mid July. I've never been but I hear it's a photographers dream. However I'm sure it will take some getting used to sunsets at 11:30pm and sunrises at 2am. I've got my list of stops but if you've been, please share your best recommendations.ArizonaMonument ValleyNavajoaustinchrischristophercvshermancvsherman.commilky waymilky way archmilkywayover austinoveratxoveraustinoveraustin.comshermantexasthe view hotel
Moonlit Canyon and Milky Way Core
You’ve not seen anything until you’ve seen the Grand Canyon lit by moonlight. The clouds would not behave, but in the end I had an hour where they cleared up and the first quarter moon shown down into the canyon while the Milky Way rose. And then, all too soon, the clouds once again hid the moon and the canyon was again plunged into darkness. The silly part was, I had the entire canyon all to myself. I did not see a single sole out that night. Road trip day 15. I’m on a 40+ day, 5,000+ mile #roadtrip of the western United States. #grandcanyon #milkyway #moonlight #moonlitcanyon — at Grand Canyon Lodge.ArizonaGrand Canyon North Rimaustinchrischristophercvshermancvsherman.comfirst quarter moonmilky waymilky way archmilkywayover austinoveratxoveraustinoveraustin.comshermantexas

Magical Moonbow and the Big Dipper
Last night's full moon provided a very brief and rare occurrence at Lower Yosemite Falls - a moonbow! - and with the Big Dipper in the sky right above. Moonbows only occur when the moon is bright enough, it's in the proper position, there are no clouds, and the waterfall in question has enough water flowing and is generating enough mist. Road trip day 22. I’m on a 40+ day, 5,000+ mile #roadtrip of the western United States.

Airplane Transits the Strawberry Moon with Saturn Below
A 1-In-A-Million Shot
Check out this shot of last night's Full Strawberry Moon with an Airplane Transit Cross the Moon and Saturn in the lower right. Open large or zoom in to see Saturn and rings.
I couldn't have planned this if I tried.
I was out having a little fun, shooting the Strawberry moon and Saturn in opposition. I didn't even see the plane transiting the moon as I was shooting. It wasn't until looking at the pics on the back of the camera later that I saw it. At first I thought it was a cloud or a bug or something.
This was shot about 50 minutes after sunset. I'm in the Wisconsin North Woods currently so I had to wait until the moon rose above the trees for clear line of sight.airplaneaustinchrischristophercvshermancvsherman.comfullmoonmoonover austinoveratxoveraustinoveraustin.comphotobombplanesaturnshermantexas
Perseids, Windmill at Dawn
I spent the night watching nature's fireworks, the Perseids Meteor Shower. They did not disappoint and I lost count how many I saw. They were so prolific you could even see them as dawn approached. Time for a nap.
