Just to the right of center below the sun you can see the Vista House, an observatory at Crown Point in Multnomah County, Oregon, that also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. This shot was taken from Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint.

The Last bit of Sun Hits Mt. Hood and Wild Clouds
I had a great time in Oregon this week. One afternoon and evening I spent focused on Mt. Hood. Here the last bit of setting sun hits Mt. Hood and lights up the underside of these strange bubbling clouds. A few minutes after this it started to rain. It lasted for about 15 minutes then blew through. Shot from from Trillium Lake.

Morning at the Old Shed behind Motel 6
This small barn (nothing more than a shed really) is located behind a Motel 6 in Cedar Park, TX (a suburb of Austin). With all the recent construction in the area it appears to be one of the last remaining old wood buildings near the stretch of road dubbed 1431 (aka East Whitestone Blvd). The ground slopes down on the building's right side and there is an upside down circular steel wash basin filled with cement near the door there, serving as a step up into the building's doorway on that side. Additional cement had been applied over the top of the bottom of the basin and the following can be seen having been drawn in finger while the cement was still wet: Nov 4 1943

New York City Port Authority Bus Terminal
Entry into the New York City Port Authority Bus Terminal which is alongside the Heartland Brewery restaurant. This section is just inside, between the outer doors leading to 8th avenue to the right and the inner doors leading into the terminal proper to the left. It's 10pm and freezing outside. These folks warm up along the wall without actually fully entering the terminal.

Lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge
Lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge. One single 13 second exposure taken at exactly 5pm on February 16, 2014 approximately midway across the bridge in 25 degree weather. For those non-New Yorkers the building with the giant spire is the yet-to-open One World Trade Center, and the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The Statue of Liberty can be seen on the left edge of the photo. Man it was cold. My fingers were numb.

Liberty as night falls
Statue of Liberty as seen last night from the Brooklyn Bridge. She amazes me every time I see her, even from this far away. There's something about seeing that torch ablaze. It was 25 degrees out and I'm sure far below that with the wind chill factored in. Fingers were numb from all the shooting but I enjoyed the walk nonetheless. Seen in the distance are cranes from Global Terminal in New Jersey and the Bayonne Bridge.

Waiting with the Elephants
This is a series of four blended long exposures ranging from 5 seconds to 60. The resulting image removed the tourists crowd, leaving behind the Asian guy who appears to have fallen asleep, the Cowboy who appears to be waiting for someone, and the Elephants who are clearly frustrated that the cowboy won't get out of their way. American Museum of Natural History, New York City, February 15, 2014.

Gone Fishin'
It's funny you how perspective can change depending on your point of view. I'm talking literally here but that statement applies psychologically as well. This photo was taken at the same time as yesterday's Lego Land Houston, except this is the opposite direction. Yesterday's post was of the Bayport Container Terminal, Port of Houston Authority. And yet, just a short distance away, in the opposite direction, the appearance of peace and tranquility. From the photo, you wouldn't know that these guys are just a 1/2 mile from the Houston Port Authority (see the previous pic on my timeline prior to this one). These four guys were just out doing some morning fishing. Beyond them you can see the channel and the ocean beyond. The overcast sky gave way to fog and haze in the background.

Morning in Oil Country
A view across Galveston Bay and just some of the many industrial refineries that sprawl across the landscape east of Houston. Fred Hartman Bridge can be seen to the left. This was shortly after sunrise on an overcast day, with the sunlight straining through the clouds and reflecting off the water. We drove by several refineries and the air was thick with the acrid smell of chemicals. They call oil "black gold" and this is definitely oil country. While I don't usually apply heavy processing to my photos I thought the editing here captured the smell in the air as well as that "black gold" focus.

Grand Central from Park Avenue Viaduct above 42nd Street
Grand Central Terminal shot from the Park Avenue Viaduct above 42nd street just before 5am Saturday morning. The Viaduct is an elevated roadway that has no pedestrian access so I chose to go stand in the center of the roadway at 5am when traffic would be lighter. It is practically the only way to get this shot of Grand Central. The Viaduct carries Park Avenue from East 40th to 46th Streets around Grand Central Terminal and the MetLife Building then through the Helmsley Building.

A Photographer Photographing Big Sur
In 2013 I spent a day traveling the Big Sur coastline of California and it was just waaayyy too short. I could spent a month there just poking around with my camera. Clearly I'm not the only one. Here an ambitious photographer is seen against the backdrop of the Pacific.
